Common questions about Shirodara Treatment
Shiro means “head,” and dhara means “dripping oil as if a strand”
The Shirodhara treatment involves a continuous stream of warm oil flowing onto the forehead, with the properties of the oil supporting the mind and body to restore balance. The oil used in Shirodhara contains herbs such as ashwagandha, brahmi/gotu kola, bhringaraj, shatavari, skullcap, and more, which help to calm the nervous system.
6 common questions about the Shirodara, Ayurvedic Treatment.
1. What does Shirodhara do to your body?
Shirodhara promotes deep relaxation and helps to reduce stress and anxiety. It has a calming effect on the nervous system and can help balance the body's energies, particularly Vata dosha. Additionally, it improves blood circulation to the head and scalp.
2. Does Shirodhara also help in hair growth?
While Shirodhara primarily focuses on relaxation and balancing the body, it indirectly supports hair health. The warm oil used in Shirodhara nourishes the scalp, moisturizes hair follicles, and improves blood circulation, which can contribute to overall hair health. However, it is important to note that Shirodhara alone may not be a definitive solution for hair growth. For specific hair concerns, it is advisable to consult with a dermatologist or a hair care specialist.
3. What do you wear to Shirodhara?
During a Shirodhara session, it is customary to undress from the waist up and wear a comfortable robe or towel to protect your clothing. Your privacy will be ensured, and the therapist will maintain a modest environment during the session.
4. How often should you do Shirodhara?
The frequency of Shirodhara sessions may vary depending on individual needs. It is generally recommended to start with a series of sessions, such as once a week for several weeks, to experience the full benefits. Afterward, you can adjust the frequency based on your preferences. Some people choose to have it monthly or as needed for relaxation and stress relief.
5. What to eat after Shirodhara?
After a Shirodhara session, it is beneficial to consume light, warm, and nourishing foods. Ayurveda suggests including easily digestible meals such as warm soups, cooked vegetables, grains like rice or quinoa, and herbal teas. It is recommended to avoid heavy, oily, and processed foods as they may counteract the therapeutic effects of Shirodhara.
6. After your Shirodhara treatment, it is recommended to cover your head with a towel for some time to continue receiving the benefits of the herbs in the oil. Avoid using electronics for at least three hours after the treatment to fully embrace the sense of peace. Finally, before washing your hair, it is best to apply shampoo before wetting it. You may also choose to sleep with the oils in your hair overnight.
Like most Ayurvedic treatments, Shirodhara is designed to reset the body's natural healing mechanisms. When done with care and the right intention, Shirodhara can bring us back to our natural state of bliss, enabling us to find inner peace regardless of what is happening in the world around us.

VERY IMPORTANT: It is advisable to avoid receiving Shirodhara if your nervous system is overstimulated with caffeine or other stimulants, as it may not be as effective in calming the mind. Also, if you are mentally agitated, it may be challenging to lie still for the entire duration of 20–30 minutes.
